BACKS AND ORDERING CODES

BACKS

From time to time, customers order a back only. This would be attached at the top and bottom using adjustable brackets mounted onto the wheelchair backrest posts and removed by releasing the retaining knobs and sliding off the forks.

More often, the backrest is fixed to the seat with a bracket. This means it usually only needs mounting to the wheelchair frame at the top of the backrest posts using the adjustable brackets and detachment forks described above.

BACKREST CHOICES.

(a) A basic backrest is approximately 1.5" thick and flat. It is built from a solid plywood base, foam filled and covered. It is water resistant and wipe clean. All backs have a zip cover.

The Scott flat back can be fitted to the mounting forks using a special dynamic extension bracket if required. This absorbs some impacts and forces.

(b) Backrests can have cut outs in their sides in the shape of an "I" or "T" to allow lateral adjustment of side supports etc. or accommodate special needs or growth requirement.

(c) To accommodate fixed deformities, the foam inside the backrest can be formed in 2" cubes (starting at the top edge) which enable portions of the foam to be easily cut away.

(d) The backrest may be ordered curved, to assist lateral support and comfort. In this instance DERFs may not be used. The curve of the foam may be deeper on one side if specified.

(e) To accommodate pelvic tilt, traditionally a sacral foam wedge has been used. However, Scott recommend a much more adjustable, controllable solution. It is called a Bi-angular back and may be specified on a curved or flat back. Its start point is specified upon prescription and its angle may be adjusted and firmly fixed infinitely during the life of the backrest.

MPORTANT ORDERING CONSIDERATIONS

Occasionally, it is helpful to avoid attaching the back to the seat. This allows adjustment on all four fixing brackets. However, if a basic system (seat and back) has been ordered, you must request and pay for the additional lower pair of brackets which are not included normally.

If you order a flat back, the fixing brackets (included) will be fixed at right angles. When a curved back is supplied, the brackets are hinged.

The backrest can fix to the seat using a fixed or hinged bracket. This can be requested flush or inset. Inset brackets extend the back deeper over the seat and create growing depth for the future.
